Conventional and the most common approach to treating knee pain is to treat the knee. The ​thinking is that the pain comes from the knee joint itself. Hence, treating the joint or replacing the joint will alleviate pain.

However, most of the pain comes from structures around the knee which impacts the joint and can worsen the pain.
